Easy Exercise for Beginners: Workouts to Start Today

https://image-api.loseitblog.com/images/GettyImages-1472355032.jpg

Embarking on a fitness journey as a beginner is exciting, yet you might find yourself asking, “Where do I begin?” The key to success lies in starting with beginner-friendly workouts that build a solid foundation and let you grow at your own pace as you gain more strength and confidence. Take a look at these beginner workouts below — they’re here to help you kickstart your fitness journey and lead you towards a healthier, more active lifestyle!

7 Workout Options for Beginners

1. Walking

Walking is one of the simplest and most effective forms of exercise for beginners. It requires no special equipment, and you can do it virtually anywhere. Start by taking short walks around your neighborhood and gradually increase your distance and pace as you become more comfortable. Aim for at least 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of moderate-intensity walking per week to improve your cardiovascular health and boost your mood.

2. Bodyweight Exercises

Bodyweight exercises are excellent for beginners because they do not require any equipment. Try starting with these three fundamental exercises: push-ups, squats, and planks.

Push-ups

Begin with modified push-ups on your knees or at the wall if regular push-ups are too challenging. Gradually progress to full push-ups as you continue to build upper body strength.

  • Try This: Do 1-5 push-ups every morning and see how your form and endurance improve in just one month!

Squats

Stand with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width distance apart and lower your body as if sitting back in a chair. Keep your shoulders back, chest proud, and your knees in line with your toes.

  • Give This a Go: Do 2 to 3 sets of squats, doing 10 to 12 reps in each set. Take a quick breather between sets before moving on to the next one.

Planks

Whether on your forearms or hands, strengthen your core by holding a plank position for as long as you can. Aim to increase your plank time gradually.

3. Yoga

Yoga is a fantastic workout for beginners, as it not only improves flexibility and strength but also promotes relaxation and mental clarity. Many online resources and classes cater specifically to beginners, making it accessible and enjoyable for all fitness levels and preferences.

4. Swimming

Swimming is a low-impact exercise that is easy on the joints, making it an excellent choice for beginners. If you can access a pool, consider taking swimming lessons to gradually improve your technique and fitness goals.

5. Cycling

Cycling (one of my favorites!) is a fun way to get active while exploring your surroundings. Start with leisurely rides in your neighborhood and progress to longer and more challenging routes as your stamina improves. A comfortable bike and helmet are essential for safety.  Outdoor cycling not for you? Consider an indoor cycling class in your own home or gym.

  • Did You Know? When cycling, it’s a good goal to aim for a heart rate between 50% and 85% of your maximum heart rate. To calculate your maximum heart rate, simply subtract your age from 220. For instance, if you’re 40 years old, your maximum heart rate is 180. So, your target heart rate during your workout should be between 90 and 153 beats per minute.

6. Resistance Bands

Resistance bands are versatile and inexpensive tools for beginners. You can use them to perform a wide range of strength exercises for both upper and lower-body workouts. They are perfect for home workouts and travel.

7. Group Fitness Classes

Many gyms and fitness studios offer beginner-friendly group classes like cycling, Zumba, or HIIT (high-intensity interval training). These classes can provide motivation and a great sense of community, making them an excellent choice for beginners.

Remember: Rest, Recovery, and Consistency Are Your Allies

Don’t underestimate the importance of giving your body time to recover after workouts. Make sure to prioritize adequate sleep and proper nutrition to support your fitness goals.

Starting your fitness journey as a beginner is an exciting opportunity. Incorporate these beginner workouts into your routine and focus on consistency. Consistency is key! As you progress, you can gradually increase the intensity and complexity of your workouts. Don’t rush it! The most important thing is to find activities you enjoy and make fitness a sustainable part of your lifestyle. With dedication and patience, you will soon experience the physical and mental benefits of a healthier, more active life.

Exercise Disclaimer: Before starting any new workout regimen, it’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider. If you experience faintness, dizziness, pain, or shortness of breath at any time while exercising, you should stop immediately. This workout is merely a suggestion and should be adjusted to fit your individual needs and goals.
